Bazian, Kurdistan – 14 March 2025 – U.S. Consul General Steve Bitner toured ONEX's key energy infrastructure projects, underscoring the strong partnership between the United States and Iraq in advancing the country’s energy sector. During his visit, CG Bitner explored the Bazian Power Plant and the Bazian refinery, both of which utilize cutting-edge American technology.
At the Bazian Power Plant, CG Bitner witnessed firsthand how ONEX is leading the transformation of Iraq’s energy landscape and contributing to its energy security. The plant, which operates with latest GE Vernova turbines, has a current generation capacity of 1,250MW, making it the second-largest private Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Kurdistan, Iraq. ONEX plans to expand this capacity to 1,500MW and begin the EPC for the expansion in Q2 2025, further solidifying its role as a major energy provider. Currently, ONEX produces 40% of Kurdistan’s power generation and supplies 10% of Iraq’s total electricity needs.
As one of GE’s largest and most trusted partners in the region, ONEX has maintained a strong collaboration with the company for over a decade, leveraging advanced American energy solutions to enhance reliability, efficiency, and sustainability in power generation.
CG Bitner also toured Bazian's refinery, a state-of-the-art facility that integrates American technology, including Ventech, to optimize refining processes and refine 45,000 bp/d. As one of only two private refineries in Iraq, our facility plays a vital role in the country’s downstream sector by refining products for Iraq’s State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO). The refinery’s advanced systems enhance the recovery value of refined products, ultimately increasing revenue generation for the Iraqi government.
During the visit, CG Bitner emphasized the strategic importance of U.S.-Iraq energy cooperation and ONEX’s pivotal role in fostering economic growth, job creation, and energy security in the region. He commended ONEX’s commitment to integrating American innovation into Iraq’s energy infrastructure, reinforcing the long-standing relationship between the two nations.
ONEX remains dedicated to expanding its footprint in Iraq’s power and refining sectors, continuing to invest in cutting-edge technologies that drive efficiency and sustainability while supporting the country’s economic development.
